The Australian Screen Editors Guild presents a brand new series of discussion panels on Accessibility Filmmaking. Catch-up on the first instalment  'Part 1: The Audience'

M.C. Stephanie Dower moderates this panel with Victoria Hunt, Sofya Gollan and Alison Meyers. They dive into the art of making videos more accessible for audiences through the use of:
  • Audio Description
  • Captioning
  • Accessible Filmmaking Practices

Victoria Hunt addendum:
"If an editor needs to caption their own videos, my recommendations would be that, along with any technical specs, they should obtain and follow established guidelines regarding:

  • font size
  • indicating speaker changes
  • where best to make line and caption breaks
  • the positioning of captions on screen
  • and the ACMA’s ‘readable, comprehensible, accurate’ guidelines

While I acknowledge that font size and colour for captions is potentially out of anyone’s control and dependent on manufacturer specs for set top boxes, etc, all of the other things make a real difference to audience members being able to easily and efficiently consume the caption information on screen."
